Hot start to the week. Rain and storm chances increase Wednesday.

We have a hot few days ahead of us across the Tennessee Valley. A Heat Advisory is in effect for both this afternoon/evening as well as tomorrow (Tuesday). Heat index values (feels-like temps) may reach up to 108° during peak daytime heating hours. Remember your heat precautions, stay hydrated, and take breaks indoors.

Expect a mostly sunny and mostly dry day, as the sun beats down warming us into the mid to upper 90s. I can’t rule out a stray thundershower or two during the afternoon or early evening, but today is looking mostly dry, hot and humid. Expect a dry and mostly clear overnight, as temperatures cool off into the lower 70s.

Tuesday will be much like Monday: hot, humid and a chance of a few afternoon thundershowers. I expect to see more rain coverage Tuesday, but still most of the area will remain dry. Rain chances significantly increase Wednesday thanks to an approaching cold frontal system. Expect widespread showers and storms Wednesday afternoon and early evening. Scattered thunderstorm chances remain in the forecast Thursday and Friday, as we finally see some relief from the heat. Well, we go from intense heat to just heat. It will still be hot, just less hot. Ha!

So yeah, by “cooler temps” we are talking going from the upper 90s to the upper 80s. But hey, we’ll take it! Mid-week thunderstorms will help to cool us off as the “cooler” front swings through. Scattered to widespread storms return to the forecast by Wednesday, so you will certainly need your rain gear by then.
