Hot start to the week. Air quality issues for some today.

One word can easily describe the beginning of this week: HOT! Air temperatures for much of this week will be in the lower 100s, if not the upper 90s. A quick note for today- Nashville and surrounding areas (including Maury County) have an Air Quality Alert out for the day. This is due to increased ground-level ozone. So what does this mean for the average person? Not really much. HOWEVER, if you have any respiratory issues like asthma, or you are going to be active outdoors today, the air quality can negatively affect your well-being. Exposure of ground-level ozone to these vulnerable groups can cause fatigue, headaches, difficulty breathing, and increased coughing.

Expect a hot afternoon with relatively low humidity. With air temperatures in the upper 90s to lower 100s, and dew points in the 50s & 60s, we really won’t be experiencing much humidity. We’ve actually got a rare bout of ‘dry heat’ days for August. Humidity will be back by Wednesday, especially Thursday of this week. Until then, we will be hot and dry!

High pressure will be in charge of our weather for the first half of the week. Moving into Thursday, we will have an approaching cold front begin to break down that high pressure and provide us with a bit more humidity and some rain & storm chances. Expect isolated to scattered thundershowers Thursday and Friday, with a slightly higher chance for rain & storms Saturday.

I’m hoping for rain by the end of the week because we’ve been bone dry the last several days and much of the area is experiencing an extreme drought. That cold front I mentioned earlier will also bring us some relief from the heat by the weekend and beyond, I know many of you are wondering how long this heat is going to last.
