The Airport Road Tornado of 1989 – 35 Years Later

This afternoon will be the 35th anniversary of the horrific Huntsville Airport Road Tornado. At around 4:30 pm on Nov 15th, 1989, a large, violent F4 tornado tore through the south side of Huntsville, AL. Some of the hardest impacted areas include Jones Valley, the Whitesburg area, Garth Mountain, and Airport Road. The deadly twister, 880 yards in width, would stay on the ground for almost 19 miles, causing damage to and or destroying over 350 structures and over 1,000 vehicles before lifting. After all was said and done, the twister would end up claiming the lives of 21 people and injuring 463. Then just hours after the storms had cleared the area, snow began to fall across the affected areas.
