Rain & thunder this evening. Will a mid-week cold front affect Thanksgiving travel?

It is a warm late November afternoon here in the Tennessee Valley. Wind gusts out of the south are ushering in these above average temperatures, with gusts up to 25mph periodically throughout the rest of the afternoon. This warm weather is not here to stay very long, as we have a few cold fronts to talk about for this week.

The sky will stay mostly cloudy as rain showers move in as early as 4pm for our western counties. Expect rain and maybe a few rumbles of thunder mixed in this evening, especially between 6pm and 10pm, with some lingering rain overnight. No severe weather is expected as this first cold front of the week pushes through.

Here’s some good news! Tuesday will feature calm, but cool weather here locally. Highs Tuesday will only reach the mid 50s with a northerly breeze. We’ll have a mostly sunny sky and no rain chance for Tuesday. This would be a great travel day if you have a longer trek for Thanksgiving.

Wednesday won’t be a bad travel day either, but the earlier in the day the better. Heavier, more widespread rain isn’t expected until the evening. That will all be accompanied by cold front number two of the week. With model solutions keeping the main system impacting us overnight, our chances of stronger storms remains on the low side. There is still time for the timing of the cold front to change, but as it stands right now, severe storms are not looking likely for the Tennessee Valley.

Wednesday overnight into Thursday morning is when we will see the highest rain coverage, with a few thunderstorms mixed in. Most of this will occur overnight, so I’d do any road traveling before Wednesday night or later in the morning on Thursday. Most of the rain looks to clear out by afternoon on Thanksgiving, however some models have rain lingering a bit longer. We will be able to iron out the timing in more detail soon.

The good news- you will not have any trouble with travel on the way back from Thanksgiving plans. However, it is going to be significantly colder for the weekend (this includes you, Black Friday shoppers!) Highs will only reach the mid 40s, with lows well below freezing for the weekend. At least we are not anticipating any precip to go along with those sub-freezing temperatures!
