Winter takes a break for now as warmer temps take hold. Rain chances Thursday into early Friday.

We have some patches of mid/high level cloud cover across the area this afternoon, but otherwise, it’s a nice weather day across the Tennessee Valley on this Wednesday. Temperatures are up into the mid 60s this afternoon, with one or two isolated spots even making a run at the upper 60s! Clouds are increasing just to our west over north Mississippi, however, and these will roll in here as we head into the evening and overnight.

Skies become mostly cloudy to overcast as we head into the overnight, and this will help to keep temperatures in the mid to maybe upper 40s for overnight lows. A few scattered light to moderate showers will be possible during the later overnight hours on through the early/mid morning of Thursday. We may get a break in the rain and a little sun in the midday to afternoon of Thursday that allows us to climb back into the mid to upper 60s. Heavier rain and rumbles of thunder move in after dark into the overnight hours Thursday night into early Friday morning. You may be awakened by some thunder, and we may see a few 30+ mph wind gusts here and there, but no severe storms are expected. That activity starts to shift east of the area as we head into the daybreak hours of Friday morning, with partially clearing skies going into the midday and afternoon, although we can’t rule out a lingering shower or two. That partial sunshine Friday afternoon allows us to return to the mid/upper 60s for daytime highs.

We temporarily return to the upper 50s on Saturday as we have northwest winds behind the cold front that moves in Friday evening. It’s a quick switch back to the 60s by Sunday though as more southwesterly winds take over and upper-level ridging builds in across the Southeast. We even look to climb into the lower 70s by early next week!

The warmer weather looks to stick around for a bit as we head into at least early February. We’re not done with winter just yet, and there will likely eventually be a switch back to cooler air, but the NWS Climate Prediction Center 6-10 day and 8-14 day outlooks show decent chances of above average temperatures for at least the first 10 days of February. We also look to have above average precipitation probabilities during this time.
