Another day, more heavy rain and thunderstorms across the Tennessee Valley. Some areas have dealt with flash flooding.

Above is a shot of some of the flash flooding from the Iron City, Tennessee area via Sam Camp of our team. This isn’t anything close to the devastating flash flooding seen in other parts of the country, but we have had to deal with some road flooding and creeks rising out of their banks from heavy rain today and what has fallen recently.

Dual-pol radar estimates of as much as 4 to 4.5″ of rain have fallen just this afternoon across southwest parts of Lawrence County, TN and southeast parts of Wayne County, TN where the most widespread flash flooding was happening. Other parts of northwest Alabama, especially parts of Lauderdale, Colbert, and Lawrence Counties, were estimated to have seen as much as 2 to 3 inches of rain this afternoon, leading to localized street and creek flooding.

As is often the case in the summer, the actual coverage of rain varies significantly from town to town across the area. However, some portions of southern Tennessee, especially in the same areas seeing flooded today, have been estimated to have had up to 6 inches of rain in the past 7 days, with similar rainfall estimates in portions of Colbert County, AL. Add this to the fact that many areas have seen 1.5 to over twice as much rain as they would normally see in the past 30 days, and it’s no wonder we are having localized flooding issues when the rain gets heavy. We’re not expecting anything like the type of flooding that has been in the news in Texas, New Mexico, and other areas…. but additional heavy rain and storms will be scattered the next several days, and localized flooding very similar to today will most likely continue to happen.
