Drought conditions update: We’re not too out of hand, but we are dry and need rain here in the Tennessee Valley!

It’s dry here in the Tennessee Valley. We’ve seen a little rain the past few weeks, but not too much. In fact, except for areas near and north of Highway 412 in middle Tennessee, the vast majority of our viewing area has seen less than a quarter of an inch of rain in the past two weeks. This is something since November is often one of our wettest months! Many areas have only seen 30 to 50% of what would be considered normal rainfall for them over the past month. 365-day rainfall deficits are starting to creep up into the 1 to 2 ft range again in parts of southern middle Tennessee, and elsewhere, it’s mainly the very wet first half of the year keeping those numbers in check! It’s also that first half of the year being well above normal in rainfall that is the main thing keeping the drought monitor in check for now, although this gets updated again on Thursday morning.

We do have some rainfall ahead in the forecast though! The NWS is outlining all of the area for near or a little over 2 inches of rainfall for the next 7 days, with most of that happening Thursday and Friday of this week and again on Tuesday of next week. The 6-10 day precipitation outlook from the NWS Climate Prediction Center has us a little above average for precipitation for Thanksgiving week, and near average as we head into the start of December (which implies there will be rain chances). We don’t see any absolute super soakers coming anytime soon, but any decent bit of rain will help!
